The Effects of Relazation Therapy on Anxiety and Health Locus of Control in Surgical Patients

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of relaxation therapy on the . anxiety and health locus of control in 30 surgical patients admitted surgical department of one University. Hospital in Wonju and one University Hospital in Seoul. The samples were assigned to an experimental or a control group. The tools of this study were A-state of Spielberger¢¥s STAT, multidimensional health locus of control scale developed by Wallston & Wallston, Jacobson¢¥s progressive relaxation therapy and blood pressure measurement. Analysis of data was done using t-test, XZ-test, and pearson correlation coefficient.
The results were as follows:
Hypothesis 1; "The experimental group with relaxation therapy will have less score of state anaxiety following surgery than the control group without relaxation therapy." was accepted. (t=-2.21, p <.05).
Hypothesis 2;"The experimental group with relaxation therapy will have more score of Internal Health Locus of control following surgery than the control group without relaxation therapy" was accepted. (t=4.47, p < .001).
Hypothesis 3; "The experimental group with relaxation therapy will have less score of blood pressure following surgery than the control group without relaxation therapy" was rejected. (Systolic pressure: t=0, p >.05, diastolic pressure: t=-0.98, p > .05).
In conclusion, the researcher thinks that it is necessary that nurses provide surgucal patients with relaxation therapy to reduce the anxiety leveLand to be internality an Health Locus of control.
